Logistics
General meetings for Fall 2024 will occur biweekly on Wednesdays from 7-8:30. The last 30 minutes are dedicated towards hacktime where teams can collaborate on their projects. Attendance is required for all members.
Build teams meet weekly at a time/location convenient to the team. Attendance is required for all build team members.
Our teams are composed of frontend, backend, and machine learning roles. Members can also apply to be build team leads.
Dues will be $30/semester for the 2024-2025 school year.
We host 4-5 socials/semester for our members. Some past examples are an evening at Zilker Park, going on a hike, and playing pickleball at Bouldin Acres! In addition to org-wide socials, individual build teams are encouraged to host socials as well!
Recruitment
Our formal recruitment cycle occurs in the fall. Prospective members are invited to attend an info session, meet team members at an optional coffee chat, and submit an application. Selected individuals will then interview for the teams they applied for. In the spring, we recruit on an as-needed basis for each team.
Our application includes submitting a resume and answering some questions about your interest in Luminescence and skill set.
Interviews this year will be 30 minute, in-person time slots with 2 members of our officer team or recruitment committee.
Projects
At the start of each year, members have the opportunity to pitch an idea during a general meeting. Members then vote on their favorite ideas, and the most popular ones are selected to work on.
No, projects can be about anything! The only requirement is that projects have some machine learning component as we are a AI/ML-focused org.
After we vote on the projects we will work on for the semester, build teams and roles are determined by the officer team based on interest and skillset. We try to put everyone in their first choice role/build team, but there are no guarantees.
Teams select what programming language/tech stack they would like to work with at the beginning of the project. Our Director of Engineering assists with this process as needed.
We want to support our build teams and the development of these projects, so we try to provide the necessary tools when possible. Members are able to submit requests for paid tools to our Director of Finance. In the past, the organization has provided hosting and computing resources to teams when needed.
We know that progress is not linear, so we don’t enforce hard deadlines on features or code written. Instead, at the beginning of each general meeting, each team updates the org on what was done since the last meeting along with future plans. In addition, about halfway through the semester, we have mid-year presentations where a thorough overview is given.
